For some time now, the only way to achieve the page flip effect of turning pages in a book online was to use flash. Flash allowed us to program amazing functionality and turn graphically intensive PDF’s or images into beautiful flipbooks for the world to see. Then along came Apple and their decision to not use flash on their mobile devices. With that limitation, people were left with some tough decisions, use flash and potentially have their flipbooks not work on Apple or stay away from flash and not use the cool animations that were available.

Thankfully, jQuery was created and became very popular among web programmers. Its popularity grew because of its ease of use as well as cross browser support. Gone were the days of tough decisions you had to make as a web programmer on whether or not your animations or interactions would work on Apple devices.

With the continual progress of jQuery and the ability to mimic anything flash can do with less code, people have come up with amazing scripts to help programmers do what they do best. One of these is Turn.js, a flipbook page turn effect that works wonders. You can take a static book you’ve created using PDFs or images and with a little bit of coding knowledge, you could easily convert them to creative and amazing e-books, digital brochures or flipbooks.

With some extra coding you can make them do even more as they are pure html. By making this script work with html the only limitation is your imagination. If you can think of it and have a way to make it work on a website you can probably make it work with these flipbooks.

Visit the Turn.js website for some examples.

The code is free to use to play around with and test functionality however; you do have to pay for a commercial use license if you’re going to go any further than that.

A full list of available functions in the full version can be found here.

To date, I’ve programmed several digital brochures and flip books using the Turn.js code for several of our clients and they couldn’t be happier with the results. They’ve used the Turn.js flipbooks we’ve created for everything from presentations, to annual reports to incredibly interactive online brochures to help promote and sell their products.
